School holiday activities in the south west

The Noongar season of Djilba is in full swing and the flowers are blooming.  Why not get out into nature these school holidays and experience the beauty of spring.

Creepy Crawlies @ RAC Margaret River Nature Park

Did you know invertebrates make up 95% of all animal species? Join the Nearer to Nature SW team as we take a closer look at the diversity of creepy crawlies that call the forest of Wooditjup National Park, their home. We will delve into the world of arthropods and discover how to identify different insects and arachnids.

  • Age: Suitable for ages 5+
  • Cost: $15 per child

Sense-ational Nightlife @RAC Margaret River Nature Park

Go exploring with spotlights as the forest comes alive after dark. Find out about the wonderful ways in which wildlife adapt to a world without light. Experience the sights, smells and sounds, learn a little about the stars and explore the forest on our blindfold rope trail. 

  • Age: Suitable for ages 5+
  • Cost: $25 per family of 4 and, $10 single
  • Date: Tuesday 7 October, 7 to 9.30pm

Nature Journaling for Kids @Wellington Discovery Forest

Join the Nearer to Nature SW team and come explore, observe and record the wonders of the Wellington Discovery Forest through nature journaling. Nature journaling is a set of skills that can be taught and learned. You do not have to be an artist to take up nature journaling, all you need is an open mind, ability to observe and be curious. Together we will explore the forest and the ideas of “I notice…I wonder… and It reminds me of….”. With guided activities involving observation, curiosity and making connections with things we already have experienced and know, we can grow our knowledge and appreciation of the wonders of nature. 

  • Age: Suitable for ages 8+
  • Cost: $15 per child
  • Date: Wednesday 8 October, 10 to 11.30am

What Bird is That? @ Big Swamp, Bunbury

Join us and volunteers from Birdlife Bunbury as we take a gentle walk around the Big Swamp wetland to spot the variety of bird species present. Tune in your hearing to different bird calls and use binoculars to help identify the different bird species that call the wetland their home. If we are lucky, we may spot black swans and spoonbills feeding or spy the bright blue plumage of a sacred kingfisher darting around.

  • Age: Suitable for ages 5+
  • Cost: $5 per family (donation to Birdlife Bunbury)
  • Date: Thursday 9 October, 9.30 to 11.30am

Deadly or Dangerous @ Wellington Discovery Forest

WA is home to many terrifying critters of all shapes and sizes. Can you guess what they are? Find out at the Wellington Discovery Forest Centre what makes these animals deadly and dangerous before discovering what to do if you encounter them. Practice your first aid skills in a fun hands-on activity. Phil from SW Reptile Rescues and Education will then introduce you to some potentially very dangerous scaley critters and some not so dangerous! 

  • Age: Suitable for ages 6-14
  • Cost: $25 per child
  • Date: Thursday 9 October, 9.30am to 12noon

Wildflower Walk @ Wellington Discovery Forest

Join us as we go on a beautiful morning walk through the Jarrah forest with Alison from Forest Explorers and the Nearer to Nature SW team at the Wellington Discovery Forest and discover the incredible flowers blooming throughout our park. Local guide Alison Melvin lives alongside Wellington National Park, where her passion for nature has grown into over 20 years of knowledge and experience. Wander trails alive with seasonal colour, discover unique jarrah forest flora and fauna, and immerse yourself in the beauty of the Southwest. For the young at heart, complete a scavenger hunt to see how many of our amazing flowers you can find and some of the special animals that help to pollinate them.

  • Age: Suitable for ages 5+
  • Cost: $15 per person (under 5s free)
  • Date: Friday 10 October, 9.30 to 11.30am

Zippy's Bush Kindy - Big adventures for little nature lovers aged 3 to 5 years

Zippy's Bush Kindy Term 4 bookings are now open.

Join Zippy Dragonfly on an early learning adventure in his new South West location at Mangrove Cove, Bunbury. Set in the beautiful Kalgulup Regional Park, with one hour session per week over an 8-week term, this interactive program will ignite your child’s curiosity and strengthen their connection to nature. Each term provides new experiences that nurture children’s confidence to explore, question and make discoveries. The program is also designed to reflect different themes, the changing seasons, and introduce new skills through nature play activities. Watch your child bloom as they learn at their own pace and grow in confidence and knowledge, with time to play, create, share stories and care for the natural world.
