The cultural significance of ‘Bulyeranging’

The area surrounding Eaglestone Rock has deep cultural roots. It marks the boundary between the ancient lands of the Kalamaia and Njaki Njaki people. The name ‘Bulyeranging’ comes from the Aboriginal word 'bulya,' which means 'warning.' This term references the dangerous sands of the dry lake surface, which could be treacherous for those that are unaware. Eaglestone Rock has stood as a natural monument in this culturally significant area for centuries.

The geological marvel of Eaglestone Rock

Around 200 million years ago, volcanic activity led to the formation of granite beneath the earth’s surface. Over time, the softer rocks above eroded, exposing the stunning granite outcrops we see today, including Eaglestone Rock. This rugged formation has been a beacon in the Nungarin District since it was first recorded by Surveyor J.S. Roe in 1836. His description of the lake, with its crust of salt and mica, paints an awe-inspiring image of the landscape that can still be seen today.

The ever-changing beauty of Lake Brown

Lake Brown, a salt lake adjoining the reserve, presents a striking contrast to the surrounding landscape. During periods of low rainfall, the lake appears as a vast white blanket of snow, while in wetter times, it transforms to a mesmerizing pink hue.

Flora, fauna, and wildflowers

You will love exploring the area around Eaglestone Rock and Lake Brown. It is home to a variety of wildlife, including lizards, kangaroos, and a diverse range of birdlife such as the majestic wedge-tailed eagles. Wildflower season, from July to October, adds an extra layer of beauty with colourful carpets of everlastings and acacias, orchids, and eucalypts in full bloom.

Facilities and visitor tips

Staying overnight at Eaglestone Rock Campground offers a quiet escape with picnic areas, tent sites, and space for small recreational vehicles and camper trailers. Toilets are provided. Just make sure you plan ahead and be prepared.
