About this park
The name Wongan stems from an Aboriginal word meaning ‘whispering hills’. The poetic name evokes the beauty of this natural setting in the Wheatbelt. Mount Matilda is a natural attraction of the area. At 434m, it’s the highest point of the Wongan Hills.
The area is noted for wonderful spring wildflower displays. Plant enthusiasts will be wowed by the rich variety of flowering plants. Over 250 different species grow here, and 17 types grow nowhere else!
Two signed walk trails will guide you through the woodland landscape. There are interesting things to see all year-round. Rest and enjoy views from the nine lookout points in the reserve. Interpretive panels offer information about the remarkable plants and animals you might see.
If you notice a big mound, tread carefully. There are still malleefowl living in the natural scrub areas. These birds are quite rare. They’re famous for building nest mounds filled with vegetation.
Packing a picnic is always a good idea! You’ll find a picnic shelter near the parking area. The walk trails start from here too.
Wongan Hills is a picturesque reserve you’ll be whispering to your friends about. So, when are you planning your day trip?
