There are surfing opportunities in marine parks and off the coast of other parks in Western Australia - including top-quality surf breaks in Ngari Capes and Ningaloo marine parks.

The same basic safety advice that applies to surfing also applies to other surf sports; bodyboarding, kitesurfing, kneeboarding, stand up paddle boarding (SUP), surfskiing, kayaking and windsurfing. Don't go into the surf unless you know what you're doing and can swim confidently.

If you are just beginning or want to try surfing to see if you like it, be prepared to learn and practice your surfing skills in places recommended for beginners. Take lessons and build your experience gradually.

There is a lot of know-how needed to interpret all sorts of information in the surf. You need to know the right time to go to each spot, the best waves for you to catch and how to the assess the conditions and risks at the time you are there. For information on how to safely enjoy beaches and coastal environments see the advice at Safety and Coastal areas.

Surf Life Saving WA, Surfing WA, Windsurfing WA and the Kiteboarding WA are all useful resources for surf sports.

Find out more about canoeing and kayaking, including clubs, at Paddle WA and about SUP at SUPWA.
